Introduction

From his first published article, on mathematical models of symbiosis and parasitism, Anatol Rapoport’s work was always concerned with the interaction between the individual and the environment, especially human society. As a leading scholar in the fields of general systems, game theory and peace research, his investigations crossed disciplinary boundaries, applying conceptual rigor to the social sciences. In his political writings, focused mainly on the abolition of war, he used insights from his scientific work to mount strong challenges to prevailing ideologies and conventional wisdom.

This website presents a collection of Rapoport’s unpublished writings, found among his papers archived at the University of Toronto. The material has been selected to provide an introduction to his work, and will be continually expanded as new text is digitized.
